On April 7, 2021, the Symposium on new materials for polar ships was successfully held in Luoyang, Henan Province. The conference was sponsored by the polar navigation and Equipment Committee of the China Institute of Navigation (hereinafter referred to as the polar special committee) and co-sponsored by the 725 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd., the National Key Laboratory of Marine Corrosion and Protection for national defense and science and technology, and the demonstration platform for advanced marine engineering and high-tech ship material production and application. The conference adopted the mode of combination of online and offline, with nearly 100 scholars attending the conference on-site and online. Liu Shunlin, director of China Polar Research Center, and Liu Shun, Deputy Secretary General of China Institute of Navigation, attended the meeting and delivered a speech online. Liao Zhiqian, deputy director of the 725 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd., attended the meeting.
The meeting was presided over by Shen Quan, Secretary General of the polar special committee. At the symposium, Sun Mingxian, deputy chief engineer of the 725 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd. made the report on "low temperature materials for polar ships and anti-corrosion technology". Representatives of Baoshan Iron and steel plant, Ningbo Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jotun coating of COSCO and Shanghai Maritime University, respectively made the latest research progress reports on the evaluation and standard of polar Marine steel, anti-ice paint, coating materials As the former captain of the Snow Dragon, Shen Quan, Secretary General of the polar special committee, gave a speech on the Chinese polar expedition, which explained the spirit of the polar region.
In the afternoon, on-site experts held a special discussion on the domestic present situation, future development trend and national planning of new materials for polar ships. Experts suggested that the outstanding achievements of the symposium should be included in the suggestions of China Maritime Think Tanks, so that more polar scientists can keep abreast of the latest progress and future development direction of polar new materials. The special committee will summarize the experts' opinions to form a special report, which will be submitted to the China Institute of Navigation in written form for reference by Maritime Think Tanks.
