Recently, Fujian provincial government released the implementation of the Layout Plan of Coastal Ports in Fujian Province (2020-2035) and approved the implementation of Master Plan of Meizhou Bay Port (2020-2035) and Master Plan of Quanzhou Port (2020-2035). According to the plans, the coastal ports in the whole Fujian province consist of four ports, namely Xiamen Port, Fuzhou Port, Meizhou Bay Port and Quanzhou Port, and will be planned to form a hierarchical development pattern with Fuzhou Port and Xiamen Port as the main coastal ports in the country and other ports as regionally important ports with division of labour and coordinated development.
The plans specify that Xiamen Port includes 9 port areas: Dongdu, Haicang, Xiang'an, Zhaoyin, Houshui, and Shima which are around Xiamen Bay, and Gulei, Dongshan and Zhao'an, which are around Dongshan Bay. The nine port areas will focus on the development of foreign trade and domestic trade container transport, crude oil transport, cruise ship transport and roll-on/roll-off transport to Taiwan province. Quanzhou Port is planned to have three port areas, namely Quanzhou Bay, Shenhu Bay and Weitou Bay, which will be developed into modern comprehensive ports focusing on domestic trade container transport in the future. Meizhou Bay Port is planned to have 5 port areas, including Xinghua, Dongwu, Xiuyu, Xiaochu and Douwei, which will be developed into comprehensive ports focusing on bulk cargo transportation such as energy, coal and iron ore.
According to the plan, by 2025, the coastal port throughput of Fujian province will reach 680 million tons, and four large ports of 100 million tons will be built, forming a modern port group with reasonable functional division of labour, optimal spatial layout, adequate protection capacity and comparative advantages; By 2035, the coastal port throughput of the province will reach 880 million tons, the throughput of Xiamen port will break through 300 million tons, and the container will break through 20 million TEUs.
