The New National Standard for Road Traffic Signs Will Come into Effect in October

The mandatory national standard "Road Traffic Signs and Markings Part 2: Road Traffic Signs" (GB 5768.2-2022) approved by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration (National Standardization Administration Committee) will come into effect on October 1. The standard is a revision of the 2009 version of the mandatory national standard for road traffic signs by the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration (National Standardization Administration Committee), in conjunction with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Public Security, and was approved for publication on March 15, 2022.

Road traffic signs and marking are the guarantee for maintaining traffic order, the rules and guidelines for vehicles and pedestrians to follow, and the basis for traffic management and law enforcement. They are the most basic and important means of traffic management widely used in the world. The 2009 version of Road Traffic Signs and Markings has been published and implemented for more than ten years. It has played an important role in promoting the improvement and standardization of the application of road traffic signs and markings in China. It has supported the rapid development of road traffic infrastructure, regulated the order of road traffic passage and improved the operational efficiency of the road network.

In recent years, with the rapid development of economy and society, urbanization has become more and more rapid, and road infrastructure construction has also developed rapidly. The growing needs of the people for a better life and the change in the concept of traffic management from passive management to active regulation have put forward higher requirements for traffic management and infrastructure protection. At present, China has fully entered the automobile society, and the number of motor vehicles has exceeded 400 million. In the automobile era, road traffic signs and markings may seem to be "small facilities", but they contain the "big livelihood" of serving public travel.

Road Traffic Signs and Marking Part 2: Road Traffic Signs (GB 5768.2 -- 2022) added 18 new traffic signs, such as "electric vehicle charging stations", "electric bicycle lane signs" and "no electric bicycle entry signs" for the new facilities and the new needs of traffic management that have emerged in recent years. In order to meet the drivers' requirements for travel convenience under complex road network and traffic operation environment, the layout, setting and use requirements of signs were refined, and the detailed requirements of information quantity, information selection principle and method are put forward. It strengthens the operability, adds the appendix such as examples of traffic sign setting, and gives the production illustration.

Next, the relevant departments will strengthen cooperation, coordination and linkage, to implement the requirement of National Standardization Development Outline, increase the publicity and implementation of new standards, strengthen the application and the collection of feedback information on the implementation of standards, strengthen the assessment of the effectiveness of the implementation of standards and the linkage of the work of standardization and revision, review, etc., to escort the efficient operation of road traffic and help to achieve "People enjoy their own travel, easier flow of goods ".
