"Without the contribution of seafarers, half of the world would be frozen and the other half would be hungry ......" June 25 is the 12th global "World Seafarers' Day". Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration, Guangdong Seafarers' Union, Guangdong Seafarer Service Association, Guangdong Shipowners’ Association jointly held the celebration of 2022 Day of the Seafarer in Guangzhou Marine Technical School.
Award ten best seafarers
Seafarers' unions, shipping companies, maritime universities and seafarers from Guangdong region, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay Area participated in the celebrations, which were held both online and offline. A video greeting from Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of IMO, was shown at the event, acknowledging the contribution made by seafarers worldwide, including Chinese seafarers, in the shipping trade, expressing concerns for seafarers who are still working on the frontline of shipping during the pandemic, and sending holiday wishes to seafarers worldwide.
The event also commended the "Top Ten Seafarers", "Top Ten Seafarers' Wives" and "Top Ten Maritime Officials" in Guangdong. Xu Guosheng, Chairman of the Guangdong Seafarers’ Union, encouraged the commended comrades to cherish the honour, make further efforts, play an exemplary and leading role and achieve greater achievements in their studies and work.

The theme of this year's Day of the Seafarer is "Share your seafaring stories - past and present", which aims to focus on the seafarers' voyage and the changes in their work and life in the new era with new development philosophy and paradigm. According to statistics, there are more than 1.8 million registered crew members in China, including more than 850,000 seafarers, accounting for one-third of the world's seafarers, making it the country with the largest number of seafarers. Guangdong is a major foreign trade and shipping province, with over 90% of foreign trade goods, over 95% of coal, and over 99% of crude oil and iron ore relying on water transportation.
During the 12th Day of the Seafarer, Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration organized a photo collection campaign on the theme of " Share your seafaring stories—past and present" to share seafaring stories and to recount seafaring life through photography, so that the whole society can pay attention to seafarers and create a good social atmosphere for seafarers' career development. According to Zhuang Zeping, Director of Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration, as of June 2022, there were 153,000 registered crew members in Guangdong Province, including 82,000 seafarers, which is about one tenth of the total number of seafarers in China.
