Zhang Baochen Nominated as the Next President of IAIN

On May 21, 2024, Beijing time, the first 2024 Executive Committee Working Meeting of the International Association of Institutes of Navigation (IAIN) was held in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The meeting reviewed and approved the 2023 financial statement, the 2024-2027 financial budget, the nominations for the next Executive Committee (2024-2027), the work reports for the preparation of the 2024 and 2027 IAIN World Congress, and the evaluation results of the 2024 John Harrison Award and the 2024 Necho Award.

 

The President of IAIN, Professor Krzysztof Czaplewski  of the Polish Navigation Forum(PNF), the Immediate Past-President, Jonh Pottle FRIN of the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), Vice President, Doctor Aiden Morrison of the Nordic Navigation Forum (NNF), Secretary General, Professor Hesham Helal of the Arab Institute of Navigation (AIN), and Treasurer, Doctor Tom Willems of the Netherlands Institute of Navigation (NIN) attended the meeting in person in the Netherlands. Senior Vice President, Professor Zhang Baochen of the China Institute of Navigation (CIN) and Vice President, Professor Salvatore Gaglione of the Italian Institute of Navigation (IIN) attended the meeting online.

Zhang Baochen, Vice chairman of the Standing Committee of CIN, attended the meeting online in Beijing.

During the meeting, Zhang Baochen reported on the preparation progress of the 2024 IAIN World Congress, which was unanimously recognized by current Officers’ Committee members. He also reported on the evaluation results for the 2024 John Harrison Award , the 2024 Necho Award, and Honorary Membership. Before the meeting, Zhang Baochen, with the support of the China Institute of Navigation Secretariat, chaired the evaluation of these awards as the Chairman of the IAIN Awards Evaluation Committee.

After deliberation and approval by the Executive Committee, Zhang Baochen was nominated as the next chairman(2024-2027) of the International Association of Institutes of Navigation (IAIN) and the result will be submitted for election at the IAIN General Assembly in October 2024. Captain Zhai Mo, a Chinese unpowered vessel navigator, was nominated for the Nicod Award, which aims to recognize outstanding contributors to the development and practice of navigation science. The award ceremony will be held at the IAIN World Congress 2024 in October.

Liu Ying, deputy secretary-general of the China Institute of Navigation (CIN), attended the Executive Committee of IAIN offline as an observer. At the same time, she participated in the 2024 European Navigation Annual Conference held at the same place after the Executive Committee meeting, and introduced the IAIN World Congress 2024 to be held in Beijing at the closing ceremony. She focused on the theme of the congress, the transportation and culture of Beijing, and mobilized the participants to actively participate in it.
