On April 23, the unveiling ceremony of the National Marine Science Popularization Education Base and the lecture on promoting the spirit of scientists were successfully held in Dong Haoyun Shipping Museum of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He Jianzhong, Chairman of China Institute of Navigation (CIN), the former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport and maritime ambassador of the International Maritime Organization (IMO); Xu Zuyuan, Director of Expert Committee of CIN, the former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Transport and maritime ambassador of IMO; Bao Qifan, the former Vice President of Shanghai international port (Group) Co., Ltd and the winner of the first highest Navigation Science And Technology Award of CIN; Qiu Ming, Party member and head of Discipline Inspection Group of Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration of Ministry of Transport; Huang Jingyu, Deputy Director of the East China Sea Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport; Lu Wei, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Salvage Bureau of the Ministry of Transport; Zhang Ye, President of the Shanghai Shipping Exchange; Yan Xiaobo, Secretary-General of CIN; Chen Xin, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Science and Technology Association; Zhang Ansheng, standing committee member and Vice President of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, as well as guests from Shanghai, Xuhui District and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and faculty and students representatives of School of Shipbuilding in Jiao Tong University and Primary school affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University. The inauguration ceremony of the National Marine Science Popularization Education Base was presided over by Hu Hao, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Shanghai Jiaotong University and head of the Propaganda Department of the Party Committee.
He Jianzhong said in his speech that the founding of Dong Haoyun Shipping Museum in Shanghai Jiao Tong University aims to spread the excellent Chinese traditional culture and convey the patriotic spirit of shipping to the public, and the museum has its special significance as science popularization education bases. Thus, he put forward three expectations for the development of nautical science education base: Firstly, it should be a “catalyst” to promote the public, especially the youth to continuously enhance maritime awareness; secondly, it should be a “main position” to vigorously carry forward the spirit of navigation in the new era; thirdly, it should be a “propeller” to promote the high level of self-reliance and self-improvement of nautical science and technology. The opening of the National Marine Science Popularization Education Base of Shanghai Jiao Tong University today also marks a new page of Marine science popularization education activities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He encouraged everyone to take the lead in building a strong modern socialist country on the new journey of building a strong maritime, transportation and shipping country.
Zhang Ansheng said in his speech that in the 127 years history of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it has shouldered the responsibility of inheriting nautical culture and developing nautical career. Since the establishment of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Marine Base for Culture, Science and Technology Popularization Education Base, a series of activities have been carried out, which have been highly praised both inside and outside the university, and have achieved excellent results in the popularization of nautical knowledge as well as nautical science and technology innovation and talent training. In the future, in the new journey of building a strong maritime country, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will further rely on the advantages of its nautical and traffic disciplines to further excavate, build and promote nautical culture and continue to carry forward the spirit of the sea on the new platform of nautical base for culture, science and education.

After the unveiling ceremony, as special guests to promote the spirit of scientists, Xu Zuyuan and Bao Qifan gave two wonderful lectures. The lectures were presided over Zhang Kai, Director of the archives, culture and museum management center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Xu Zuyuan, with the title of “spreading the spirit of navigation in the new era and building a strong ocean country”, gave a lecture from four aspects, including the inspiration and reflection brought by the age of exploration, building strong ocean state is the way to national prosperity and rejuvenation and the excellent spirit of navigation is an important element to continue the Chinese civilization and the cultivation of maritime talents is a long-term plan to realize a strong ocean country. In the new era, on the way to build a modern strong ocean country, we need to have a clear understanding of internal and external problems and we select and implement effective methods and paths to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Bao Qifan, with the title of “scientific and technological innovation supports the development of world-class ports”, told the story of innovation and hard work of himself and his team. He said that we should follow the leadership of the core socialist values. He also mentioned that innovation is the first driving force to lead the development and it is the fundamental to support the development of world-class ports. Bao believed that innovation is in the post and begins at the daily work, and everyone has the capability to innovate. When we are striving for innovation, we should also focus on the method and try to be the first to demonstrate and be persistent and be willing to share result together. He pointed out that it’s of great importance for us to achieve “inheritance, assistance and lead” of the spirit of scientific and technological innovation, set up role models for young scientists and technicians, do our best to help workers participate in job innovation activities, and strive for greater glory for the Party and the people in the new journey.
After the meeting, the guests also visited the Dong Haoyun Shipping Museum to fully experience the Chinese maritime culture and the patriotic entrepreneur’s patriotic spirit.
