On the morning of January 29, Carlos Guedes Soares, newly elected Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2025, visited the China Institute of Navigation (CIN). He engaged in discussions with representatives of the Institute on topics including academic activities in the maritime field, deep integration of industry, academia, and research, as well as academic development. Secretary-General Liu Shun, Deputy Secretaries-General Liu Ying and Wu Bing, along with representatives from the Journal Editorial Department and the Science and Technology Service Department, attended the meeting.
The Institute extended its congratulations to Academician Carlos on his election and provided a comprehensive introduction to CIN’s progress and achievements in areas such as science and technology services, academic exchanges, think tank development, and scientific journals. The highlights of Academician Carlos’ long-term participation and support for the Institute’s work were also reviewed. Both sides conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on enhancing the Institute’s international cooperation, promoting the application of research projects, and fostering the international dissemination of maritime culture.

Academician Carlos has long been committed to promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the international community in the maritime field and the academic circle of shipbuilding and ocean engineering for a long time. He holds significant academic influence in areas such as waterway transportation, ship structures, and ocean engineering. He is also an Academician of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering and a Distinguished Professor at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. On this occasion, he was also invited to serve as an International Editorial Board Member for the second editorial board of the Chinese core journal Navigation of China, sponsored by CIN, and as an Academic Advisor for the journal Marine Technology. This will further enhance the international influence of both journals.
At the end of the visit, Yan Xinping, President of the CIN, presented a maritime cultural souvenir to his longtime friend Academician Carlos, extending an invitation on behalf of the Institute for a wide range of international collaborations.
