Polar Navigation and Equipment Committee of CIN Established

  On September 26, 2018, the Inaugural Meeting of Polar Navigation and Equipment Committee of CIN (hereinafter referred to as "the Polar Committee") & Polar Navigation and Equipment Forum was successfully held on the polar research ship "Xue Long". Qin Weijia, Director of Polar Research Office of Ministry of Natural Resources, Yang Huigeng, Director of Polar Research Institute of China Ministry of Natural Resources, Cao Di, Executive Vice Chairman of the CIN, and Gu Weiguo, Deputy Secretary General of CIN, attended the conference to congratulate its establishment. A total number of 117 representatives from all over the country attended the conference, including government departments, universities, scientific research institutions, and enterprises. The first committee members and management groups were elected in the conference.

  The Polar Committee is designated to better implement the guidelines from General Secretary Xi Jinping's major policy----Working Together to Build a Community of Shared Future for Mankind, to actively respond to the strategy of China’s Marine Power as well as policies and principles of development in the polar areas. Relevant resources about polar researches need to be integrated to further expand scientific researches in the polar areas as well as R&D and application in navigation technologies and equipment. The advantages should be fully utilized to deepen the contact and cooperation with relevant government departments, industry systems, enterprises and individuals, while the Polar Committee will be actively engaged in polar navigation and polar equipment researches(including ships, marine engineering and marine auxiliary equipment). Thus it's of great practical significance for promoting China's marine shipping and equipment R&D in the polar areas.

  Approved by the 5th Session of the 8th Council of CIN, Polar Research Institute of China was the assigned organizer of the Polar Committee. Nearly 3 month preparations ripened its establishment. The Polar Committee is a professional sub-organization of CIN and a trans-region, trans-department and trans-industry national group which is voluntarily formed by relevant units, organizations and individuals in polar navigation and equipment. This Committee and its Secretariat are both affiliated to the Natural Resources Ministry of the PRIC. In the 1st session, Liu Shunlin, Secretary of the Party Committee of PRIC, was elected as the Director, Cai Meijiang, Vice General Manager of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Co.,Ltd, as the Permanent Deputy Director. Other Deputy Directors, Secretary Generals, Deputy Secretary Generals were also elected in the conference.

  Liu Shunlin, the newly elected Director of the Polar Committee, made a speech. He said that the Polar Committee would be engaged in scientific research and data statistics and standardized application of navigation technology and equipment development in polar areas. It will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with relevant government departments, industrial systems, enterprises, and individuals and explore the systematic research and commercial operation in the polar waters navigation, polar equipment (including ships, marine engineering and marine auxiliary equipment) and polar shipping pollution prevention. He held the view that the newly established Polar Committee would actively carry out its work in accordance with the requirements of the CIN and strive to learn from the other committees to engage scientific and technological workers in polar areas for a brilliant future.

  Cao Di, Executive Vice Chairman of the CIN, made the concluding remarks. He extended his sincere thanks to all parties for their hard work, and warm congratulations to all the newly elected members of the committee. Emphasizing the significance of setting up the Polar Committee, he finally put forward three hopes and suggestions:

1. Giving full play to the advantage of institutes to develop the service industry. 2. Insisting on scientific and technological innovation to lead the technical progress. 3. Holding on to the right path to promote reform and stimulate vitality.
