Donghai No.2 Flying Service of Ministry of Transport Rescued the Seafarer Who Got Sudden Illness on the International Freight

On July 17, a seafarer on the vessel "FALCON TRIDENT" suffered a sudden heart attack while passing sea area in Xiamen. He was in urgent need of treatment. As informed, Donghai Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport assigned Donghai No.2 Flying Service of Ministry of Transport to send a helicopter to carry the seafarer.

   At 8:10 a.m., the B-7328 crew on duty immediately made flight preparation and rescue plans after receving the mission. As the vessel (Liberian nationality) and the sick seafarer (Ukrainian nationality) are foreign nationalities, the watch office and the rescue crew prepared for protection in strict accordance with guidelines for prevention and control of epidemic for treatment of overseas injured seafarers, aiming to prevent imported COVID-19 cases.

   After getting in contact with the shipping agency, the watch office  confirmed that vessel was currently sailing 65 kilometers off southeast Xiamen, and that other crew on board were in good conditions. But only the foreign seafarer was suspected of food poisoning. Later, the watch office reported to Xiamen Municipal Health Commission and other related departments, noticing Xiang’an Hospital of Xiamen University to prepare to recieve the patient in advance.

   At 8:32 a.m., the B-7328 crew took off from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport to carry out the rescue mission. At 9:14 a.m., after a short search, the B-7328 crew located the vessel and made an immediate rescue. At the time, the patient in his protective suits was waiting on deck with the help of his fellow crew. After that, lifeguards hoisted the sick seafarer into the helicopter. At 9:31a.m., the crew completed the field operation and took the patient to the hospital.

   On the way to hospital, the lifeguards paid attention to the patient's physical condition and timely reported the patient's vital symptoms to the watch office so as to timely inform the hospital of the patient’s condition for a good treatment. The watch office required that the hospital test and quarantine the crew on B-7328 for COVID-1 , and disinfect the aircraft after they arrived. At 9:56 a.m., B-7328 landed safely in Xiang'an Hospital of Xiamen University and transferred the patient to the hospital.

After completing the mission, the rescue crew stayed in hospital for quarantine and observation in order to completely cut off the source of infection.

Through treatment and detection in hospital, the result of nucleic acid test of the seafarer was negative and his preliminary diagnosis was rhabdomyolysis. The B-7328 crew returned to work after their quarantine was released.
